A new series of "Living Healthy" workshops begins Wednesday at Noyes Mental Health and Wellness

Livingston County News - 7/12/2017

A new series of "Living Healthy" workshops begins Wednesday at Noyes Mental Health and Wellness, 9221 Robert Hart Drive, Dansville.

The classes will meet from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday for six weeks.

Living Healthy workshops help participants increase their energy and get relief from pain, fatigue and difficult emotions; take control of their life, and learn from others who have similar health issues.

The Living Healthy workshop is a 6-session, peer-led health education program for people with any type of ongoing health condition and compliments the healthcare that person may already be receiving. The purpose of the Living Healthy workshop is to enhance one's skills and ability to manage their health and maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle, organizers said.

In addition, participants learn or enhance their problem-solving and decision-making skills which enable them to confront the ever-changing challenges of living with chronic health conditions.

Program content includes: decision-making and problem-solving skills, developing and maintaining a safe, long-term physical activity program, fatigue management, dealing with anger, depression and difficult emotions, cognitive management of pain and stress, communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals, using prescribed medication appropriately, healthy eating, making informed treatment decisions and planning for future health care.

The course is facilitated by two trained volunteers. Participants are invited to bring a family member, friend and/or caretaker.

To register, call (585) 335-4358 or email livinghealthy@noyeshealth.org

Living Healthy workshops are educational programs designed to help people manage life with chronic pain or disease. They are based on the Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP). This evidence-based, self-management education program helps participants learn self-management skills needed to help deal with the symptoms of their chronic condition and with the life role changes and emotions experienced when living with a chronic condition.

The emphasis of the workshop's curriculum is to help people manage common problems such as fatigue; communicate with friends, family, and providers; deal with anger and depression; and design and maintain a healthy eating and exercise plan. In addition, participants learn disease related decision-making and problem solving skills.
