BRIEF: $200,000 grant awarded to Macon, DeWitt counties for children's mental health

Herald & Review - 7/13/2018

July 13--DECATUR -- Macon and DeWitt counties make up one of five regions that will receive a 13-month $200,000 planning grant from the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation, the organization said Thursday.

The grants will enable mental and physical health providers, schools, parents, youth and other organizations to develop plans to improve the health of children and communities, the foundation said. Five regions were chosen from a pool of 29 submitted proposals.

The foundation said the grant money will benefit organizations such as Heritage Behavioral Health Center, Crossing Healthcare, the Macon County Health Department and HSHS St. Mary's Hospital.

If the communities' planning processes are successful, the foundation said, then each will receive second grants of $2.1 million over six years to implement the plans.

One in 10 children in Illinois from a mental illness severe enough to cause some level of impairment, but only about 20 percent of them receive mental health services, according to the foundation. A coordinated system of care can provide the resources children and families need to thrive.
