Health problems may have factored in homicide-suicide at park
Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier - 1/19/2017
Jan. 19--WATERLOO -- A couple found dead at George Wyth State Park suffered from long-term health problems, according to police.
A Tuesday autopsy confirmed Neil J. Miller, 86, and Marilyn Margaret Miller, 83, of Waterloo, died of gunshot wounds. Police say the husband took both their lives.
Waterloo police said the couple's health issues may have been the motive.
"There were medical issues with both of them, and this was his mindset as to why he did this," said Capt. David Mohlis with the Waterloo Police Department. Those who knew the couple said they didn't want to go to a nursing home.
The Millers were married 65 years. Neil Miller worked at John Deere Tractor Works and at Midwest Pattern Co. where he made the molds for heat shields used on Mercury space capsules in the 1960s, according to Courier archives. In retirement, he owned a construction company. Marilyn Miller worked at Construction Machinery Co. and helped with her husband's business.
A person at the park found Neil Miller's body near a bench that overlooks Brinker Lake on Saturday morning. The bench had been dedicated to Miller and reads "Neil Miller, 80th birthday, Loves sunset."
